Olympic Dam

hm..viac sa uz nedalo?!?
A short post from my next business trip. This time my steps led about an hour by plane north of Adelaide. The place is called Olympic Dam and is one of the biggest mine which mined copper, along with uranium. And just because of uranium is radioactive they have very strict safety regulations. Radioactivity is here, however, very low, lower than the dose an individual gets on the plane. The whole theater is because of government.
Before arrival, I had to complete online health and safety training, after mastering I had to bring my certificate, otherwise they would not let me in. But you do not need to bring any protective clothing because they provide all there. It works like this. After passing the main gate you go into the locker room, where there are two zones - dirty and clean. When entering from the outside world, first you enter the clean sector, where everyone has his locker with washed clothes. And I mean everything. You can't bring any clothes to dirty zone, including underwear. At end of the day we come back through the dirty zone. Here again you throw all the things in the big bath for laundry, then each one is required to shower. After that you move to the clean zone to your cabinet, where the civilian clothes is locked. Get dressed, go out the main gate and the day in the mines is over.
Overall the work wasn't very complex, but it was a great experience, even because of the number of rules they have I couldn't see so much, because they would not let me go anywhere. After the work I moved a few miles to the one and only hotel in the adjacent small town of Roxby Downs that have actually been built when they built this mine. It's just a few streets, one hotel, shopping center, school, cinema. A little hideaway  But hotel was to my surprise pretty nice, even had a swimming pool in the middle, but it was out of service but maybe just because of spring still coming. I have to go back here in a couple of weeks, so I'm curious, maybe next time I can also swim there :)

On the bikes along the beach

As I probably wrote, we bought bikes with Slavka couple of weeks ago and we truly use them on pretty regular basis. There are pretty good cycling paths in the city. One of our best is the ocean road, along the beach. I also bought a bicycle carrier, so I don't have to disassemble them all the time and try to push them into trunk. Instead, I just throw put them onto the carrier and that's it. It is for a three bikes, so even one to spare :)
Beginning mostly on Scarborough beach and then continuing to the north, and as long as pavement road goes. It is about 20 km in one direction, so with the break it takes us around two and a half hours and we always have a great trip. We've already made this route several times, once also with Bjoern, so we have even a photo together. On the way that we've already met more than enough, in addition to other cyclists, runners and dog owners last time the snake who tried to cross the road. Fortunately he ignored us, so we really ran away as quickly as possible.
Our second quite popular route is in the city center around the river. It's also shorter one, but again pleasant, nicely in the city center. In the middle of the river is a small island aso we went there to have a look what's there. Among other things, we discovered a few kangaroos there :)
Once we have also went with Bjorn and Kathi to Fremantle, it's about 60km there and back, but we went pretty late so we had to turn around a  few kilometers before the end  and go home, so we could be back before sunset. All routes are  only slightly hilly, so it is very east to cycle for me and Slavka. On the way to Fremantle, we actually saw a dolphin in one bay! What an amazing experience. Although I do not know, what do dolphins do in the fresh water river and if they don't mind the fresh water, but apparently they like it there. Maybe there are more fish, so they come there to eat, who knows.
And the last parth is just for an hour, which I mainly use during the week after work, when there is no time for long one. I'm going straight from home couple of kilometers until I reach a lake, it's probably only about 6 km around the lake. So I usually make two rounds and then go home. Paths are great, and completely empty. Everyone use a car here, so even if there are not cycle paths everywhere, I do not mind at all as you can always use a walkway.

Sometimes, when we are able to agreed upon, after the bike ride we continue with a hearty feast on the beach. Even recently, we met with everyone and we did some barbecue from what we've had - or better said what's been left in the fridge:)
Also to give the complete information, so far no harm has happened to us, just the other day Slavka was a bit frightened when a bee (or other buzzing insect) landed on her head. So in a panic and stress she depress ed both brakes and as she has a very good brakes, she flew over the front wheel. She landed on the ground a little harder, but luckily she had just a few bruises on the legs and some scratches on the hands.
Well, as they say, with sport to permanent disability!

Walyunga National Park

the whole group
Although spring is still a few weeks away, more and more often we have a pretty sunny days and most especially these nice days are at the weekends. While we haven't planned nothing extra for this weekend, it came very handy that Vojtech plans trips for every weekend. So today we will join them.
They choose a trip to a remote national park - Walyunga. It is just over half an hour's drive north of Perth. It looks like the weather today is going to be pleasant, sunny and quite warm. At the entrance to the park we have to pay the fee for the car, but here it is very strange. Or better said, it's great here. You pay in fact in an abandoned booth, no one checks whether you've paid or not, but the people here are very honest and nice so everyone pays a few dollars to enter the park, because they know that the money will be used for its maintenance. So there are clean toilets and clean trash bins everywhere.
We had several routes as an option but I must say that it was rather an easy type of routes. Therefore, we chose the largest circle route, which was about ten kilometers  Since we've been to similar hike with Slavka already, this time I did not take any changes and I put my hiking boots on immediately so I was well protected from huge ants. Well, anyway it didn't really help me too much. Ants are here really, really aggressive, you just go down the road, where they also move and they immediately climb over your boots and then bite into the legs as much as they can. So anyway, I ended up with several bites in the end.

At about half the route we had a short break for lunch, and even along the way we managed to meet some living creatures - that is, apart from the aforementioned ants. We saw wild kangaroos and a yellow-green parrots in the trees. It looks very nice, because the kangaroos are very curious and they look out what's going on and the whole thing looks very cute.
If there wouldn't be the red-brown soil, one would have thought of it as we would be somewhere on a trip at home in Slovakia. Nature here is truly nice. We are already looking forward to spring, when everything starts to bloom. Apparently there is a large variety of flowers so I'm looking forward to see that.
